Perth update 2. Training

So keeping up with my Perth updates I'm going to give you an idea of what my training has been like. So I have started up with a hole new squad, I was sad to leave my squad in Melbourne the only reason being the geographical distance. I have started up with Chris Lang the high Performance coach in WA. We have a strong group of around six athletes, what has worked in my favour is that fact that four of the six athletes are guys with the same goals as myself. It also helps we are all the same age. It has been great having like minded people to train with for most sessions. Our swimming has been overseen by Mel Tantrum the head coach of UWA swim squad. I have been hitting the water five times a week with Mel and have doubled my weekly volume since moving to Perth ( permitting my car gets me to the pool ) and this has improved my swimming closer to where it needs to be to race at the level I want to be at. When I can find that consistency in my training over weeks and months I feel i'm going to start to make some very big steps forward! I'm getting excited for what can only be a strong season of racing.

Perth update part 1

Ok so I thought I would write an update of how life out west is treating me.
I have been in Perth a couple of months now, with a few exciting changes. My training is going well, uni is good and the weather is amazing! I will go deeper into some other topics soon but one exciting thing to happen in the last week has been the inclusion to my new universities Elite Athlete Program.  This is a program that supports students at ECU training and competing at an elite level. I'm pretty stoked to say the least and it has given me new enthusiasm.

XTERRA Australia

So in the last week or so XTERRA AUS has been announced for April 7 2013. To say Im excited is an understatement! The race is going to be run in my home state of Victoria, in Anglesea on the great ocean road on a course I have raced on in the past. The course is hard! having raced the Tri X off road Triathlon all I can say is be ready for some tuff climbing on the bike and a lot of running on sand!

This is a race I have been looking forward to for years, XTERRA is something I really believe suits my style and strengths as well as my personality.

I'm counting down the days till registration opens

Heres a video giving you an idea of what the area has to offer

100th blog post

So for my 100th blog post I have some braking news. I have been accepted into Edith Cowan University, doing exercise and sports science. Edith Cowan is in Perth’s northern suburb of Joondalup. So I will be packing up and moving over to Perth, Yes Perth the other side of Australia to Melbourne. For those of you with very little idea of geography that is 3300 KM away. I’m getting pretty excited for this move and a change in scenery. I will be living 500m from the beach and 500m from one of Perth’s favourite Triathlon race locations.
Ontop of this, I have achieve a small goal in my blogging life and just clicked 100 blog posts.

Preparation

Last week I headed out on the bike for my Saturday long ride. In the morning I opened my front door to grey sky's but a warmish Melbourne winter morning. The clouds looked dark and grey, but the temperature fooled me. I failed to pack a jacket, one of my biggest mistakes. I headed out to meet the group ( turns out the group decided to do a windtrainer session) and after twenty minutes it started to rain, the rain progressed to heavy rain and in turn I started to look like a drowned cat on a bike. After another twenty minutes of rain I started to get really cold! I had to turn home, but I had left it to late and was already shaking and numb. The ride home was mostly down hill making me even worse, cutting the storey short I got home freezing! struggled to open the door and after a hot shower it was still over two hours before I got back to feeling warm.

What did this ride teach me? Well it drummed in the fact of important it is to prepare properly for every ride! Also this I can relate to racing and life! If you don't prepare properly your going to come short in your goals. So with this in mind I'm trying to relate this to my training and life. My new outlook is to nail everything like my final exam or major race is coming up next week. I believe if I take this attitude its not going to be hard to nail my goals.

Not much blogging = a lot going on in life

Not much blogging doesn't always mean that  not much is going on in my life. Here's a little bit of an update.
I have moved out of my family home into the north eastern outer suburb of Eltham. Its a great place to train and live. I have also decided that I will be moving to Perth Western Australia in July, I have put many university applications in several university's so hopefully I will have some more info in regards to this in the coming weeks. I have returned to full training with a few changes and taken a couple of new jobs, I have started Fencing with my housemate. This is pretty physically hard but its good to be working outside, I continue to work at the Complete angler and I have started at a new swim school in this last school term at the Eltham Leisure centre. All of this has kept me pretty busy but I'm just trying to tick all the boxes and move forward with everything.

Sydney

So this weekend I will be heading up to Sydney to watch the last National series race on the Australian claender as well as the first Dextro WTS race. Pretty disappointed not to be racing open age in Sydney but these things happen especially seeing I acquired myself a time trial bike just for this event. So I'm going to be totally committed to spectating and cheering. Below is a promo video for the WTS, this year is going to be an exciting one with the olympics in London coming up so have a little sneak peak and see what its all about.

My Rides

My rides

So I thought it would be good to do a review of my rides. These are the bikes I train and race on day in day out. The reason I love these bikes so much is, every single bike has a lengthy story behind its life and build.

This is newest bike to my stable, The Scott Plasma LTD, Ultergra build, Detec Carbon clinchers and Profile T2 bars with amazing zebra bar tape! What an amazing Time trial bike! This bike started life with my friend Naish Chapman, when he no longer needed a time trial bike and I had two road bikes a trade was organised and the Scott got a bit of a rebuild. Now she is my non drafting triathlon race bike.

My favourite bike to get out and ride has to be my Kona King Kikapu, it’s another new addition to my bike family. Hands down the King has to be my favourite bike to ride any day of the week. Nothing better than getting out in the dirt and elements, trashing though the bush, climbing and descending the dual suspension fox float rp2 is rear shock is amazing compared to the hard tail I was riding before the King came along.

Last but not least is my Lemond Victorie, the bike that holds a special place in my heart. This bike was part of an 18th birthday present. It has had many builds over the years and even was stolen for 45mins. It started life as a full bontrager and ultetrga build, now full Dura ace a mixture of 7800 and 7900, 3T, Bontrager, Mavic, selle itlia and Fiziki and conti. Its super light and amazing to ride coming in at sub 7kg.

Annual off road Triathlon

Next weekend mark’s my annual return to off road triathlon racing, I wish this form of racing wasn’t an annual event, but in my part of Australia the off road racing is far and few between. Xterra or off road triathlon is something I have wanted to get more heavily into, but being a broke student, that leaves few options for travel to races. So on the 17th of March I will competing in Creswick on an amazing looking course with all the technical and physical demands of many of the higher profile Xterra or off road races. We can only hope that in a few years more races like this will pop up around Australia and hopefully we can get an Xterra championship races happening?

Moving out

So I haven't been blogging much recently, the main reason being that there hasn't been much to write about.
But just recently I have taken the plunge and moved out of my family home. Big move, but a positive one that I'm looking forward to.
