A year in review

A year in review

Everyone seems to be doing it, so why not?

Like many years before it 2011 started on the 1st of January. With only 2 days left in 2011 I can confidently say that this year has gone very quickly and I have done a huge amount. I went overseas for the first time ever; I changed coaches, got fired, got new jobs, raced in France, trained in Scotland, went to 2nd world countries, got injured, recovered, crashed my bike and recovered again.

Everyone seems to be reviewing there years; I don’t want to bore people with minor technical details. So here is my year in dot point form.

• New Coach

• Triathlon in France

• Travelling in Europe

• Deferred from study

• New jobs

• New ideas

• New goals

• Decided to return to study in 2012

• Better grasp on life

I hope everyone has a happy new year and I hope next year will be bigger and better than last year.

New Gear!

So life has been very good to me recently, it was made even better when I dropped by Evolution Cycles yesterday and picked up some new kit!

Evolution cycles is my newest supporter/ sponsor. They have an amazing set up, with great people and great products. I tested out the mew kit last night at our rollers session and its comfy really comfy! The distinctive subtlety is what I like most about my new kit, hopefully you will be able to recognise me as I trundle past on my bike.

My hair is getting pretty long

So with all this amazing weather we are having Donna and myself spent a night down at G Chalmers beach house in Rye, after a fun morning out on her boat it was time to ride back home to make sure I got the Km in for the day. The scenery along the way was amazing to say the least! The ride from Rye to Melbourne following the coast is one many cyclist of Melbourne will have done. Here's a pic of me rolling out G Chalmers drive way.

Mixing it up a bit

So I decided to do a little bit of mountain biking last week. Seeing I’m looking at doing Xterra NZ I should really do a lot more, but finding time and people to ride with isn’t always essay. So I decided to head down the coast and stop off along the way at a trail that runs along the coast for 10ish km. This trail is brutal! It runs along the coast from Phillip Island to Kilcunda in Vic south east coast. The ride has very little Technical sections but it is full of insane climbing. Here are a few pics of the view from my ride.

Back into the full swing of things, a weekend of training

So being back in Melbourne is great for training! It makes so much difference having a strong group of guys around me to train with. On the Saturday just past we went out for our long aerobic ride with some strength work mixed in. The short group went 120km and the long group around 200km, not being up to a solid 200km I went for the shorter option of 120km, the route went something like this 6.30am ride to Collingwood, Bundoora, Whitlesea, up Humevale across to Kinglake, down Kinglake though St Andrews, Eltham then onto Heidelberg arriving home around 1pm. Here is a map of the ride, I'm hoping to find a way to put up a little more data than just a map, but that will have to wait.

So Sunday was another day of long aerobic work, running. With some strength work involving some solid hills. Departed from Westerfolds park at around 8.30am for 90mins and approximately 20km. Was great to be out on the trails even after the rain we have had, Aus trails are significantly more interesting than the trails I have been used to running in France. One day I will take a camera out with me on one of these long runs, but for now you will just have to deal with the google earth map.

Home sweet home

So I'm back in Melbourne after a 40 hour adventure from the south of Italy. I'm missing the backpacking lifestyle I lived for the last few weeks, but I'm also very excited to start some hard training and the upcoming season in AUS. I had a good talk with Simon Knowles http://jarasport.com.au/ my coach this morning and its good to see we are going in the same direction!
I would like to send a shout out to my good friend and most loyal blog reader, Lizzy!
Thank you Lizzy

When eating a sandwich

When eating a sandwich. I find huge satisfaction when I make an amazing sandwich, getting everything together in the right quantities, textures, and most importantly taste! This has led me to think long and hard about the sandwich. What bread is best? Cheese or no cheese? Healthy or just really tasty? These are all pretty simple questions, the one that really troubles me and leaves me stumped is, which side to tackle my sandwich from? Let me explain my theory. To keep it simple lets say we have a sandwich with stock standard wonder white bread, ham, cheese, lettuce and tomato. So on one side of the sandwich you would put cheese and ham. On the other side you would have lettuce and tomato. Lets just say the lettuce and ham are in the middle and the tomato and cheese are on the outside touching the bread. If you bite down on the sandwich with the cheese on top, your tongue is going to hit bread/ tomato first, but if you bite down on the sandwich with the tomato on top, you're going to hit bread/ cheese first! And this TOTALLY changes the way the sandwich tastes! This is a huge issue I have to tackle almost everyday! So usually I go with the ingredient I like the most on the bottom, but what to do with a Sub style sandwich? I cant figure this one out at all! So from now on everyone should think more about the orientation of their sandwich when taking the first bite, and when buying a sandwich the layers of ingredients should be listed in order because this can totally change how a sandwich tastes.

One of my Favourite areas in the world!

The Great Ocean Road and Otways have everything you could ever need! Amazing beaches, forrest, road riding, mountain biking, fly fishing, camping, hiking, running trails, surf just to name a few! Here's a short video showing some of the road riding in the area. The mountain biking is equally amazing if not more!

Major Weakness

So as a want to be athlete I try and eat fairly healthy. I would say I have a very good diet covering pretty much everything I need to stay healthy and strong.

Except, I have one weakness when it come's to food. This is only a relatively new weakness, I tasted the smooth chocolatey delight less than a year ago. Donna introduced me to my new found Love! At first I didn't think I would like it, but being a pretty opened minded person I was willing to give it a go. It didn't look that appealing but OMG was it good! Thats where I began my love/ obsession which now can only be described as an addiction! I find it quite Ironic that Donna, my other main weakness introduced me to my current overpowering obsession.

And what is this holy grail of food you ask?

I eat it with a spoon from the jar, I spread it on almost anything! There are so many combinations of things that can be eaten with Nutella! A large jar will only last 2 days with me around. I hope people can understand what I'm going though and if the people from Ferrero are out there reading this and would like to become my major nutrition sponsor go right ahead, I'm sure I can mix some Nutella in a bottle and call it a sports drink!

Crash Bandicoot

Some people like to call me crash bandicoot! Not because I wear a crazy mask and shout WOBBYDWOOBA. I Had a bit of a stack yesterday out on the MTB in Scotland. Went up some big mountains and found some amazing trails! But whilst descending I came into a little bit of grief! Lucky I didn't land on anything important just my head, cracking my helmet in the process, which is a bit of a drag! At the time I though I had really hurt myself, but after a few minutes I realised nothing was broken and I was just going to be really sore for a few days. So sitting here in Scotland not really able to move my neck, bruised face, noise, legs and body all feeling very stiff!

I may look something like this

Hopefully I can bounce back quickly and get back to some solid training in Scotland

Scottish Adventure

So for a change I have decided to head to Scotland to train with one of the guys from my club. Rory Downie http://www.rorydownie.com/, Will be good to get in the pool with some good swimmers and strong riders instead of the solo training I have been used to for the last 2 months. I have never been to Scotland so not sure what to expect, hopefully something like this.......

Or

Or maybe

?

Who knows? But seriously should be good to see some different place and meet some cool people.

The mind games you play with yourself

These are my thoughts on the subject

I have all ways found that the person I find hardest to beat is the one that lives between my ears. The mind games I play with myself when everything isn't going according to plan is the HARDEST thing about training and racing. I know that most of my bad races have come down to a mental aspect rather than a physical. Very few times has the mind wanted to do something and the body not responded! This makes the brain one of the most powerful things I can use when racing and training. Yet its also the hardest to train because it is a lot more complex than your heart and legs. When you are happy with yourself and everything around you, it all seems to fall into place, this is what I'm working towards. Nothing is better than everything working well together mind and body!

Getting pretty philosophical here. But thats what I find hardest about sport

Literature

So with a lot of spare time on my hands I thought I might jump on a online book store and order myself some books to read. So I found a couple of titles that took my interest all very similar in theme. see below

Hopefully I can brush up on my skills on the tools from the Zinn books and the biographies make for a interesting read.

On a totally un related topic, we had  a Hedgehog move into the garden! One of my goals when coming to france was to find a Hedgehog, Squirrel and Dear. I'am yet to find a Dear but the two others are ticked off the list. Here is a few pics of our new garden friend.
